The client had recently purchased this thirty-year-old
traditional split foyer home for its convenient location and beautiful
landscaping, patio and Sunroom.
She desired to open up the Living, Dining, Kitchen, and
Foyer areas to each other and to the existing Sunroom to achieve a more open
contemporary look and to be able to easily enjoy the Sunroom and views of the
back yard.
With two bearing walls and the need to maintain wall
space for Kitchen cabinets, we created arched openings over counter areas and
large cased openings where walls could be removed but a beam was needed. The
wall between the Kitchen and Dining Room, along with the Pantry and the Coat
Closet in the Foyer were completely removed. Numerous deep drawers in a
generous island replaced the pantry. A large arch-top window was installed
above a new clear glass French door and new sidelights.
A custom-made plexi-glass rail with trim to match the
flooring was utilized, and to enlarge the landing area at the top of the stair,
the Kitchen island curved in an arc of glass block acheiving both openness and
a contemporary look.
